DIY Huge Chalkboard Menuboard

This chalkboard is 2ft x 6ft.

I started with 2 sheets of 2ft x 4ft MDF with Chalkboard Paint.  I trimmed a little off of each board so that the seam of the two would be underneath one of the dividing boards.

I used 1x4's for the outer frame.  I planned to use 1x4's for the inside too, but I decided they were too wide.  So I got a 1x6, cut them to the length I wanted, and then cut them in half. That was the perfect size.

I laid them all out to make sure I liked it. (LOVED IT!)

Then I took my can of red spray paint and painted all the boards.
On No! I HATED it! :(

So I picked up a can of "Mis-tint" paint at Home Depot for $7 and loaded it in my paint sprayer.

Luckily it was self-priming so it only took one coat and the red was gone.

To put the "frame" on I just pulled the board off the side of my work table...

then used the brad nailer to attach them.

After I got the outside frame on, the middle ones were all just a little too big.  We trimmed them down and then put them on the same way as the outer frame.

Done LOVE IT!
I am taking custom order locally for this item and have also offered to make them with few sections one for each family member, which I think would be super cute!

  1. That will be a wonderful idea a few years from now (for me) when I am ready to start a family and routines start to become time consuming and crazy! That seems like a super easy, but large, creation! Great job!

  13. What a great idea for the kitchen! It's a pretty long board, so I might have to combine Saturday/Sunday or break it into two levels. We definitely need to work on meal planning around here, so thanks for the wonderful inspiration! Natalie @ Confetti Diaries

  14. I MAY get my act together long enough to create a menu board but I doubt I would ever have my menu planned out five days ahead of time. :D Some days I swear I don't know what's going to be happening in the next fifteen minutes. :D
    Thanks for sharing.
