Shelving Makeover

This project is from a few years ago. I have been saving it for when I had a busy weekend and not much time to write a post.  My sister's wedding was this past weekend so it was definitely a busy one!

Sorry this is not a great picture (below).  I think I took it when we were still moving in to our house. See the green trim around the door on the left and the pink around the door on the right?  I painted over those so fast I had forgotten they were ever those colors until I looked at this picture!

The entire hallway was pink, and after I painted it all white,  those brown cabinets were a real eye sore.  Plus the shelves were all crooked and I wanted new straight ones.  To my surprise when we went to rip down the shelves we found that they weren't shelves at all.  They were just some melamine stacked together! There wasn't a single nail or screw in them!  It made them really easy to take down though!

For the new shelves my husband just screwed 1x4's to the wall and then placed shelving cut-to-length on top of them. Then I got the fun job a painting them!  Speaking of painting see that banister you can just see the bottom of in the corner.  That was also an ugly pink color.  I thought it would be such a pain to try and paint that with a brush.... so you know what I painted it with?.... An Old SOCK! Yep that's right I just put it over my hand, dipped it in paint and then rubbed it on the banister.  And it worked GREAT!

I mentioned this project was a little while ago. Here is how it looked right after I finished it. It is not quite that organized anymore. I wish it was!  I'll have to make this the next spot on my list that needs some re-organizing!

In the picture above you can see the unfinished floor.  The last part of this project was finishing the wood laminate that matched into the kitchen floor.  If you have ever wanted wood laminate flooring, but thought you couldn't put it in, you were wrong!  This stuff is SO easy to put in!

I love this flooring so much at the bottom of my stairs and the white shelves look SO much better than before!

Never miss a new post!

  1. This re-do is great....the coat of white paint really brightens up the place. Also your replacing the shelving definitely has more flexibility than your old shelves. Excellent!

  3. Wow.. Shows what a coat of paint and some elbow grease can do.. and I hear you about shelving never staying the way it starts. It makes me want to put doors on everything, since I hate being reminded of my mess!

  4. Great job! Love the white paint, who would have ever thought to use an old sock for painting, what a great idea. Might just use that trick sometime.

  5. love to see someone getting organized. It inspires me to do the same. I have a doosy that I just can't seem to force myself to get around to. There is always something more important (or more fun) to do. Found your post at Salt Tree.
Hope you'll stop over and visit me at Quirky Vistas!

  6. It looks fabulous. Totally understand about busy wedding weekends. My daughtger's wedding was the first of this month and I am just now getting back to normal. Thanks for sharing this project. Too funny about the melamine "shelves." At least it was easy to take apart.

  8. Cute blog. Love the title! Closets are so tough to keep organized. It's annoying. Thank God there is a door so we can all hide our messiness, LOL!!!
